Description
Jungles resounding with the screams of howler monkeys. Reverberations of civilizations past found in ancient Mayan ruins. Beautiful beaches that stretch forever. Spectacular nature reserves inviting eco-tourism. The colonial masterpieces of the walled city of Campeche (declared a World Heritage Site) and the cultural capital of Merida. Yes, the Yucatan certainly seems to have it all.
And the best place to enjoy this sun- and history-soaked peninsula is from luxurious LaCURE Yucatan villas. With stunning views, private pools, staff dedicated to service and all the amenities imaginable, our properties would make the gods of old smile in approval.
Not only do Mayan architectural sites abound, many of its ancient traditions live on. Many women still wear a traditional blouse called a huipil, and some homes are still built with straw rooftops. There are also the regional henequen haciendas, many of which have been converted into posh hotels, with museums, restaurants and spa services.
Merida, the so-called White City, offers wonderful local cuisine. Take a stroll down Paseo Montejo Avenue to view the city’s most important historical buildings. Not far away, in the heart of a cenotes zone (freshwater pools connecting to submerged caverns) is the country's most important Mayan site: Chichen Itza.
Chichen Itza, the ancient Mayan capital, offers architectural wonders, such El Castillo (also known as the of Pyramid of Kukulcan), where you can witness the shadow image of a plumed serpent descend on the pyramid's stairs every spring equinox, and Juego de Pelota, the largest ball court in Mesoamerica. There's also the spectacular Cenote Sagrado, a large sinkhole that has yielded many golden treasures, as well as the bones of young women who were thrown into the water as an offering to Chaac, the Mayan rain god.
The Yucatan's year-round hot and humid climate makes many gravitate to beaches, to indulge in their abundant water sports, or just relax and do nothing at all. It also boasts gorgeous natural environments, such as Celestun, the habitat for hundreds of pink flamingoes, or Ria Lagartos, where you can go kayaking through the mangroves.
No matter how active you are, you know that you will return to the complete pampering privacy of your LaCURE Yucatan villa, where you can recharge your batteries for another exciting day.
