The walls of the gorge exhibit the stratum of limestone and rock that have become exposed over centuries of erosion.

Caves abound on Crete as well and you can find many worth seeing. The cave of the Elefantos has an underwater entrance and stunning red and white stalactites; it was home to four different species of elephants during ancient times. The cave of Tzani, in Omalos, is another impressive sight, with subterranean rivers, springs, and waterfalls. Long days of spelunking and gorge hiking deserve lavish nights of pampered elegance.
