The Bahamas lie in the Atlantic Ocean and are technically not Caribbean Islands - yet this archipelago of sandy isles and cays conjure up many peoples dream of a tropical paradise.
The Bahamas were named by their first European visitor, Christopher Columbus. After observing the shallow sea around these many islands, he said "Baja mar" (low water or sea), and effectively named the area The Bahamas, or " The Islands of the Shallow Sea." A group of dissident English Puritans arrived on Eleuthera in 1648 and later that same century, many of the famed Pirates of the Caribbean used the cays and inlets of the Bahamas to hide their ships and their treasures.
Today these countless small islands and cays offer many of the best beaches in the world. Nassau offers great shopping and wonderful restaurants as well as casinos and nightlife, while the Out Islands offer simplicity and serenity.
